A GOOD MORNING AMERICA BOOK CLUB PICK
A hardworking single mom returns to her seaside hometown and stumbles into a fake dating situationship with a wealthy, workaholic scion, from the New York Times bestselling author of Nora Goes Off Script.
If they start by pretending, can they end with something real? Dolly Brick has never met a problem she couldn’t solve. Not when her mom left when she was twelve, and not at thirty-nine when she moves with her son back to Whitfield, Rhode Island, for the summer to keep her dad and brother from losing the family home. So when she comes across Stewart Whitfield—annoyingly handsome scion of the Whitfield family—with a flat tire and at the wrong end of a very public, very humiliating breakup, it’s in her nature to help. But Stewart’s proposed arrangement ends up being more than either of them bargained for, because as public dinners and high-society benefits turn into sunset boat rides and kisses that hit her bloodstream like a ghost pepper, Dolly starts to feel something more than helpful. She’s never relied on anyone besides herself—can she really start now?
πMy Thoughts:
First off, A GMA Book Club pick??? Finally my girl Annabel is getting some recognition! If you do a blog search you'll see that I've been a fan of hers for many years. I have yet to read something of hers that I didn't give five stars, if she writes it I have to buy it at this point. There is just something about the way that she writes that has me laughing out loud while I'm reading and smiling down at my kindle/book. If you want to make your significant other jealous of how much you're smiling at NOT HIM/HER, buy this book. While this story is about a single mom who works at a fish house and gets paid money to fake date a guy to fix her dad's roof, somehow you feel whimsical while you read it. I can't explain it and that is the spell that Annabel Monaghan weaves. Now that I'm done waxing poetic about one of my fave authors, let's talk about the book because I loved it. Dolly is a Boston kindergarten teacher/uber driver/customer service phone rep/single mom with a heart of gold, and she reads like a Bostonian to me. I could almost hear her accent. She'd do anything for her family and she will prove that to you over and over again. She has a penchant for calculating things that can't be quantified into percentages. There is a 3rd act breakup but I liked that she didn't wrap it up nicely in a happily ever after bow, the characters are more realistic. But it still ends happy. I don't care what anyone says, Annabel is the undisputed queen of summer romance in my eyes. She does such a great job of mixing comedy with poignant moments. It feels like a story that you're living and experiencing and trust me, this is one you'll want to live.
